School is out! At least in the south it is, and although children are busy with fun summer activities, it is always great to include reading for fun summer activities (spring, summer, fall and winter too)!

For the younger pre-readers, you should set time aside everyday and read to them. Also encourage them to look at books, and make up stories based on the pictures. All the encouragement needed, may be just to have books they can reach/pick up or hand them a good book and start the story off by making up a story based on what you see in the first picture. Then it's their turn!

If you have an older child who is reading, at any level, help them pick out summer reading books. Their school may have a summer reading list, and libraries often have summer reading programs. Help them pick out a goal and list to read over the summer - all from books that are 'easy readers' for their ability, 'just right' readers for their ability, and 'challenge' books for their reading ability. Another great way to get them reading words and spelling is through crossword puzzles. You can print out some great ones (and answer keys) off the computer - no need to buy a book unless you want too.

Happy reading!
